This is a painting I recently finished of my grandfather. I didn’t really know him very well as he died when I was 5. But I do remember him vaguely as an old man sitting in a chair watching Lawerence Welk. There were a lot of grandchildren in the family. Grandpa and Grandma had 8 kids and my dad was one of the younger ones. I wanted to paint a family member; to paint someone from the past – to remember and honor him.
Just because you spend part of your childhood growing up on a farm does not mean you know all there is to know about farm animals. I remember cows and calves. I remember being told in no uncertain terms to stay away from the bulls. But I thought a cow was a cow until I saw a highlander. I didn’t even know that was what they were called. Fortunately in art class we don’t just learn about painting. I learn other equally as important stuff like the proper name of animals. So let me introduce you to the “highlander”.
I love to visit farmer’s markets when we travel. We went to the Dallas farmer’s market which was an ok market. Not as great as Madison’s farmers market. Next door to the Dallas farmers market is this awesome garden center. A mean it is AWESOME place. It was there that I saw the radio flyer filledwith succulents. I said to myself I to paint it.
